6-11-2024: catching characters (drafting)
An awesome graphic novel, in opinion of artgraphic-db, Himawari House Novel by Harmony Becker, about 374 pages of illustrations, 1500 drawings ?, and the real art of catching Asian characters in simple, essentials lines.
Inspired by the style, and getting keen on experimenting Krita painting/drawing editor (see resources), a special focus has been put on the two excerpts below, wishing to reproduce the play of shades and values (in fact the shown scans have passed difficultly the Black and White print quality of the book).
I am pretty happy by the result. Just to say that it is NOT a copy. The process was really to sketch the faces, to take notes on how the shading were made, and to draw in Krita.
It was NOT the intent to scan the book, trace the bitmaps back to scalable paths (conversion to SVG), as Krita accepts both SVG objects and pixel layers, and improve or handle here and there the parameters or points of the SVG objects (see previous blog for more details).
I have realized that the light on the fronthead of the friend, before she cries, extends on all the fronthead from the hair, not only on the eyebrows boss, as I made.
Also, the purpose is about light and shade, and I have used the second character instead of drawing two different characters. The shade is pretty good on the second character, I think, not looking alike a beard.
Below, snips of the digital visuals.
